National Heroes Day in the Cayman Islands
January 26th here in the Cayman Islands marked the celebration of National Heroes Day, which is 1 of Cayman’s most memorable and patriotic annual observances public holidays.
National Heroes Day is the time we reflect upon our proud past and united as a country celebrated with a parade and awards ceremony in central George Town. The Ceremony pays tribute and honors those who have made significant contributions and a difference to the field of Health Services here in the Cayman Islands.
In 1993 the Legislative Assembly passed the National Heroes Law and in 1994 our first National Hero, Was Hon. James (Jim) Manoah Bodden was given this honour on 28th June 1994. Mr. Manoah Bodden was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1972, and served two terms as a member of Executive Council.
In 1996 the second national hero was Mrs. Sybil Ione McLaughlin, MBE, JP. Mrs. McLaughlin received the country’s highest honour in 1996 and was the first Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
Mr. Thomas William Farrington, CBE, JP was declared national hero in 2011. Mr. Farrington became a civil servant in 1921, and until today he remains the longest-serving representative in the Legislative Assembly.
Mrs. Sybil Joyce Hylton, MBE received the Cayman Islands Certificate and Badge of Honour in 1968 and was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) ten years later after an outstanding commitment to youth amount other many achievements.
Caymanians are proud to celebrate and honour our heroes with the utmost respect that they deserve and commemorate National Heroes Day for all that it stands for.
