Easter in the Cayman Islands
Easter is only a week away and here in the Cayman Islands it is all about spending time with family and friends and reflecting on God’s blessings. During this time it is also traditional for families and friends to camp out together on the beaches around the island, sharing meatless dishes such as Easter bun and cheese or fried fish in honor of the holiday. In fact if you are out and about, you will see hundreds of people at some of the more popular beaches such as Seven mile beach, Spots beach, Rum point, Kaibo and Queens Highway in East End. However, camping is not limited to these areas and there are many other locations to choose from.
When camping out on the island, there are a few rules to keep in mind:
- All garbage must be put in a bin and if there isn’t one available then take the garbage with you when you leave.
- The law requires for the safe disposal of human waste and if you are not camping out at one of the popular beaches where restrooms are available then you should consider renting a portaloo,
- You cannot camp on any land where a “Do Not Trespass” or “Private Property sign is displayed.
- Lighting a bonfire is illegal unless permission is obtained from the Department of Environmental Health beforehand.
Hopefully these tips will help you to get the fun started as you plan a traditional Caymanian campout over the long Easter break! Don’t forget to pick up some Easter bun and cheese from any of the local super markets or some fresh fish at the waterfront to take with you on your camp out.
